TIL a Survey of U.S. States Found More Mentally Ill Persons Are in Jails and Prisons Than Hospitals

via reddit.com

Water is wet

By the way, this is because the US all but fully criminalizes mental illness. Mentally ill people make up a major portion of three population pools that are most often singled out by our criminal justice system: the working poor, the homeless, and drug addicts. As you’d imagine, it’s mentally ill poc, and mentally ill black women and trans individuals in particular, who face the brunt of this systemic violence. All of this is no accident. Nor is it an accident that state-funded psychiatric hospitals are basically no better than prison in terms of facility conditions or treatment of patients. This has been going on for literally centuries. So I repeat: water is wet. This should come as no surprise – and if it does, you need to educate yourself.
